Emergence of VanB phenotype-vanA genotype Enterococcus faecium clinical isolate in Bulgaria.

anA glycopeptide resistance is characterized by acquired nducible resistance to both vancomycin and teicoplanin, hereas the VanB phenotype is characterized by variable evels of resistance to vancomycin but susceptibility to eicoplanin.1 Here we report a vancomycin-resistant Enterooccus faecium (VREFm) strain with VanB phenotype-vanA enotype incongruence. In the course of antimicrobial susceptib...

VanB phenotype-vanA genotype Enterococcus faecium with heterogeneous expression of teicoplanin resistance.

Six VanB phenotype-vanA genotype isolates of Enterococcus faecium with heterogeneous expression of teicoplanin resistance which gave rise to an outbreak at a Korean tertiary care teaching hospital have IS1216V in the coding region of vanS. This could be the underlying cause of the VanB phenotype-vanA genotype with heterogeneous expression of teicoplanin resistance.

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium clinical isolates from two hospitals in Mexico: First detection of VanB phenotype-vanA genotype.

INTRODUCTION Enterococcus faecium has emerged as a multidrug-resistant nosocomial pathogen involved in outbreaks worldwide. Our aim was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility, biofilm production, and clonal relatedness of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium (VREF) clinical isolates from two hospitals in Mexico. METHODS Consecutive clinical isolates (n=56) were collected in two tertiary car...

Disruption of vanS by IS1216V in a clinical isolate of Enterococcus faecium with VanA glycopeptide resistance.

The elements that mediate VanA glycopeptide resistance in enterococci are heterogeneous. Twenty-four distinct VanA elements were identified among a collection of enterococci isolated from hospital patients and nonhuman sources in the United Kingdom (9). Despite their diversity, all these elements showed extensive homology with the prototype VanA transposon, Tn1546, from Enterococcus faecium BM4...
